Tim Conway, ‘Carol Burnett Show’ star, dead at 85

The actor died at 8:45 a.m. after a long bout with illness, Conway's daughter Kelly, confirmed in a press release Tuesday morning. Prior to his death, he had suffered complications from normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) and had no signs of dementia or Alzheimer's, Bragman said. It was his work in Carol Burnett's variety show that really stood out, however, as he earned a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in the series as well as several Primetime Emmys.

Those qualities probably contributed to his wide popularity on "The Carol Burnett Show", which he joined in 1975 after years as a frequent guest. He won two more Emmys for guest appearances on Coach and 30 Rock.

"It is with the greatest sorrow that my brothers, Tim, Patrick, Jamie, Corey, Seann, and I announce that our Dad, Tim Conway has passed away", the statement reads. Later in his career, Conway's stepdaughter became the manager for his live tour with longtime friend and former co-star, Harvey Korman.

The actor was a student at Bowling State University and served in the United States Army, People.com says. He got his career start on local TV in Cleveland in the 1950s, where his duties included comedy spots on a late-night movie show.

Following the Allen show, Conway gained attention as the incompetent Ensign Charles Parker on the Ernest Borgnine sitcom "McHale's Navy" from 1962-66.

Conway also starred in the "Dorf" series of short videos as a sawed-off golf instructor, borrowing the accent his Mr. Tudball character used.

Conway was married twice, first to Mary Anne Dalton, from 1961 to 1978, and then to Charlene Fusco, whom he married in 1984.
