Weather good for SpaceX's first Starlink satellite launch Wednesday night

The static fire test is complete and it is ready for launch on May 15th at 10:30 p.m. ET, given that the weather permits.

The launch is a small part of what SpaceX ultimately wants to be a much grander project: a group of potentially thousands of satellites swirling over Earth that the company says could eventually make available low-priced internet for a significant portion of the world's population that isn't yet online.

Musk said SpaceX plans to launch roughly 60 satellites at a time as it builds out its constellation.

The payload fairing for the first Starlink Falcon 9 mission. With few clouds expected, the launch might be seen from around Central Florida. Compared with existing web satellite systems, LEO satellite constellations are a lot nearer to Earth-99 to 1,200 miles rather than the 22,000 miles utilized by conventional geostationary satellites. In the same post, Elon Musk included a picture of its battery electric vehicle sports auto that seems really small inside its fairing, back in February 2018 before the launching of the first test flight of Falcon Heavy spacecraft.

In a conference call Wednesday, Musk said the satellites will deploy within an hour after launch, most likely over Tasmania.

The rocket company, founded by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, was supposed to launch a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida, at 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Therefore, the company hopes to get its much larger rocket, the Starship, into action soon. That makes Starlink key to producing the money that SpaceX needs to subsidize Musk's bigger dream of growing new shuttle fit for flying paying clients to the moon and in the long run attempting to colonize Mars. Another six launches will be required before even "minor" coverage is offered. He forecast that high-density deployment of satellites could cause a cascade effect, and where each collision generates space debris that increases the likelihood of further collisions in space. After their useful life, they simply would burn up upon entering the atmosphere. Other companies have similar projects regarding internet space satellites ongoing, such as OneWeb and Blue Origin mission that plans to create a similar independent mega-constellation. OneWeb also has plans to send up 900 satellites by 2021, and launched the first six in February.

SpaceX asked for and received US market access for a constellation numbering nearly 12,000 satellites. Starlink is only authorized for operations in the United States. SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell also recently stated this launch will focus on scaled down "test satellites" that, while very capable, lack intersatellite links.
