William Barr appoints United States attorney to examine origins of Russian Federation probe

Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions appointed the US attorney in Utah, John Huber, to review aspects of the Russian Federation investigation, but it is unclear what he has been investigating or has found. Durham's selection was first reported by the New York Times.

Barr assigned CT prosecutor John Durham to the task.

In 1999, Attorney General Janet Reno appointed Durham to investigate law enforcement corruption in Boston, and more recently, Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. called on him to investigate the treatment of Central Intelligence Agency detainees and the destruction of videotapes.

While Durham has been appointed to this special investigative assignment, he is notably not a special counsel, a role that would come with increased authority.

Mueller also found 10 "episodes" of potential obstruction of justice by President Trump but ultimately concluded that it was not his place to determine whether the president broke the law.

He then pivoted to the specific political impact of Barr's new announced investigation, saying "But the idea that the predicate for the investigation wasn't sound is exactly what President Trump, the bereaved President Trump and those close to him, want this to be, a conspiracy". "An informant working for USA intelligence posed as a Cambridge University research assistant in September 2016 to try to probe George Papadopoulos, then a Trump foreign policy adviser, on the campaign's possible ties to Russian Federation, it emerged earlier this month". Page's communications were surveilled in late 2016 and early 2017, after he left the Trump campaign.

In April, a Trump administration official told Fox News that Barr had assembled a team to investigate the origins of the Obama administration's FBI counterintelligence investigation of the Trump campaign.

Russian Federation has repeatedly denied any claims of interference in the U.S. political system, saying the allegations were made up to excuse the election loss of Trump's opponent and deflect public attention from actual instances of election fraud and corruption.
