Mamata agrees to live coverage of meeting with protesting doctors

The state government had sent a formal letter of invitation to the striking junior doctors to meet, urging them to reach the Chief Minister's Office at Nabanno by 2.30 p.m.

A delegation of 30 doctors will be at Nobanno to meet the West Bengal Chief Minister after protesting medicos stuck to their demand and agreed to meet Mamata Banerjee on Monday only after the official confirmation of live media coverage of the discussion. However, the Chief Minister said that mass resignation had little value. The meeting, held in presence of the media, came as hospitals around the country suspended all but essential services in solidarity with the Bengal doctors.

She said the state government has taken adequate measures and arrested five people involved in NRS incident.

Resident Doctors' Association of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi, which earlier decided not to join the strike, announced withdrawal of all nonessential services from noon after a junior doctor at its trauma centre was assaulted in the early hours of Monday.

It should be noted that extending their support, doctors and students of Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) also staged a protest and took part in a demonstration at the GMCH premises on Friday, June 14. The statement did not carry the signature of any individual. "We will not meet behind closed doors", the agitating doctors said.

They added that once their demands were met "adequately and logically", they were hopeful the CM would be considerate enough to end the impasse.

In a related development, Priyank Kanoongo, the chairperson of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, arrived in Kolkata on Saturday night and visited paediatric wards in three state-run hospitals to verify reports that at least two children have died allegedly due to lack of proper treatment during the agitation. Ego can not be more important than the lives of children.

Union health minister Harsh Vardhan on Saturday asked states to consider enacting specific legislation for protecting doctors and medical professionals from any form of violence.

The apex medical body, IMA, has demanded a comprehensive central law in dealing with violence on doctors and healthcare staff.
