Sudan’s Bashir charged on corruption in first public appearance since ouster

The violent beak-up marked a turn in the standoff between the protesters and the military, which removed autocratic President Omar al-Bashir from power in April after a months-long popular uprising against his 30-year rule.

Military forces secure the area outside while Sudan's ousted president Omar al-Bashir is questioned at the prosecutor's office over charges of corruption and illegal possession of foreign currency, in Khartoum the capital of Sudan.

Bashir, wearing traditional white robes and turban, was driven in a Toyota Land Cruiser to the prosecutor's office in Khartoum, a Reuters witness said.

The announcement came more than two months after the military overthrew Bashir following mass nationwide protests against his iron-fisted rule.

Bashir, who was toppled on 11 April following months of protests and is now being held in the capital's Kober prison, swept to power in an Islamist-backed coup in 1989.

"Whoever committed any fault" will be held accountable, Dagalo added.

After talks between protest leaders and the military collapsed, troops allegedly opened fire on the crwods, killing at least 120 people according to local doctors.

Dagalo also vowed that those proved responsible for the bloody break-up of the protesters' sit-in outside the military's headquarters in Khartoum on June 3 would be given the death sentence.

Al-Bashir is also wanted by the International Criminal Court over charges of war crimes and genocide linked to the Darfur conflict in the 2000s, but the military has said it would not extradite him to The Hague.

"We are working hard to take those who did this to the gallows", Hemeti said in a televised speech, according to the AFP news agency.

Protesters and witnesses accuse the feared paramilitary group led by the deputy chief, the Rapid Support Forces, of carrying out the assault on demonstrators.

Authorities say only 61 were killed and the Transitional Military Council ordered an investigation into the violence.

"We assure you that the council is keen to investigate minute by minute facts through its investigation committee".

As calls for an independent probe grew, Arab League chief Ahmed Aboul Gheit visited Khartoum on Sunday where the TMC said he met its chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.

Brig Abderrahim Badreddine, spokesman for the investigative committee, said initial findings showed "officers and soldiers of different ranks from regular forces entered the sit-in without any orders from their superiors".

The military council took over the reigns of power after the coup and declared it would rule for two years before handing over to a civilian government.

It was the first time Bashir has been seen in public since his ouster by the army on April 11.
