US Supreme Court vacates ruling against bakers who refused to serve lesbians

The court sentenced the Christian couple to a fine of $135,000 for the "emotional damage" they had allegedly caused the lesbian pair. The lower court ruled that 11 districts were the product of unconstitutional racial gerrymandering - that is, the legislators who drew the districts relied too heavily on race. "This SCOTUS decision is a major win for voting rights and civil rights in our commonwealth", they continued.

The justices vacated that lower court decision and ordered a do-over in line with the Supreme Court's ruling past year where the justices found anti-religious sentiments poisoned Colorado's case against a different baker.

The Supreme Court's action let stand a 2018 ruling by a federal three-judge panel that the 11 districts all violated the rights of black voters to equal protection under the law under the U.S. Constitution's 14th Amendment.

In Masterpiece, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of baker Jack Phillips, who could not in good conscience create a cake celebrating a homosexual union, on the grounds that the state had exhibited anti-religious animus in its punishing of Phillips.

The case concerned Melissa and Aaron Klein, who operated "Sweetcakes by Melissa" in Oregon.

The largest-known US uranium deposit will remain firmly under ground after the Supreme Court on Monday upheld Virginia's moratorium on mining the radioactive metal, rebuffing a challenge backed by the Trump administration to the ban.

The U.S. Supreme Court told OR courts Monday to take another look at the case of former bakery owners who were fined $135,000 for refusing to bake a custom wedding case for a same-sex couple.

The Klein petition was filed by the Texas-based law firm First Liberty in October and been pending before the Supreme Court for almost a year. The bakers refused to make a cake to celebrate the same-sex wedding of Rachel Cryer and Laurel Bowman.

"The Kleins created these cakes, in part, because they wanted to celebrate weddings between one man and one woman", the petition said. "The Supreme Court seems to making something much harder than it needs to be, when, in fact, it really seems to be a very straightforward application of well-settled legal principles".

Another similar case decided earlier also resulted in the Supreme Court refusing to decide the issue. This month, the Washington Supreme Court ruled against Stutzman a second time.

But those justices split evenly among two competing opinions over discussions of the court's role in inquiring about the intentions of state and federal lawmakers - the latest skirmish in the fight about judicial philosophy and the role of the Supreme Court when reviewing laws.

Until now, the Christian business owners have lost in the courts.

When McPherson returned to the shop to protest, Aaron Klein quoted a Bible passage: "You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female, it is an abomination".

"I think that their analysis below was extremely thorough, and, I think, in many ways should have been put to rest any of the concerns that the court found in the Masterpiece Cakeshop case to the extent that they want to ask them to go back just show their work and make absolutely sure that there's nothing to be concerned about", McGowan said.

Monday's decision cuts against the Trump administration, which argued in November that allowing the Virginia ban without reviewing the state's objective would amount to "giving states a roadmap for undermining a multi-billion-dollar industry".
