A superbright fireball likely rained meteorites on the Earth

The Canadian province of Ontario was lit up by a meteoroid as bright as a full moon.

"Brown says the fireball likely dropped a small quantity of meteorites in the Bancroft area, and he suspects "...

He said: "This meteor got very deep into the atmosphere so we think there are probably rocks on the ground".

The Western University All-Sky Camera Network picked up the fireball at 2:44 a.m. ET (July 24) across southern Ontario and Quebec.

"It was also captured by multiple cameras belonging to the Southern Ontario Meteor Network, and an analysis of the data provided by these cameras indicate that the meteor became visible at an altitude of 58 miles above the northern shore of Lake Ontario, moving to the northeast at 55,000 miles per hour. This is a good indicator that material survived", said Brown. From the astronomers' analysis, they think the meteoroid that created the fireball was about the size of a small beachball, or almost 12 inches (30 centimeters) across.

When these meteors reach Earth's atmosphere, both friction from the atmosphere and the bow shock that forms in front of the space rock heat it up.

It was first spotted just south of Oshawa over Lake Ontario.

Keep in mind, if you do end up finding some of these meteorites, Western and the Royal Ontario Museum are interested in connecting with you, so they can study these unbelievable space rocks. It flew over Clarington and passed just west of Peterborough before extinguishing west of Bancroft.

These meteorite fragments were in the size-range of tens to hundreds of grams when they hit the ground, the researchers said.

The researchers say meteorites can be recognized by their dark, often scalloped exterior.

Brown and his collaborators at the university and the Royal Ontario Museum are calling for folks around the area of the potential fall, who may have heard anything unusual, or who may have found possible meteorites to connect with them. They're not risky, but if recovered, Western University recommends placing them in a clean plastic bag or wrapping them in aluminum foil. "If recovered, it is best to place them in a clean plastic bag or wrap them in aluminum foil". They should also be handled as little as possible to help preserve their scientific value. But the university warned that those looking to find a meteorite should be aware that fragments belong to the person who owns the land where they're found, and that permission must be granted to search on private land.
