But Atletico addressed the deal shortly after it was made official, claiming the club is owed more than the €120 million tabled by Barcelona because the transfer agreement occurred well before July 1, when Griezmann's buyout clause dropped from €200 million to €120 million.

The 28-year-old, a World Cup victor with France last summer, has signed a contract that will run until 2024, the Catalan club said.

"Antoine Griezmann, represented by his lawyer, has appeared at the headquarters of the Professional Football League to unilaterally terminate the contract that links the player with Atletico de Madrid, with FC Barcelona having deposited the sum of €120 million in the name and on behalf of the footballer", Atletico Madrid said in a statement.

Griezmann, 28, has been linked to Barcelona for years.

Barcelona have yet to respond to Atletico's statement, but this disagreement was mentioned several weeks ago, as Griezmann confirmed he wanted to leave the Madrid club and move to the Nou Camp.

The drama may not end here, however.

After months of speculation and confirmation from Griezmann that he had made a decision to leave Atletico earlier this summer, his move to Barcelona was confirmed on Friday, but a legal wrangle may now begin between the two clubs.

Griezmann had announced in May he would be leaving Atletico Madrid.

Following an internal debate, though, with Bartomeu and coach Ernesto Valverde both advocates for the signing, they chose to reactivate their interest in him.

He was scouted by Basque club Real Sociedad at the age of 14.

The 2018 World Cup victor becomes the world's sixth most expensive signing behind Ousmane Dembele, Joao Felix, Kylian Mbappe, Philippe Coutinho and Neymar.

Atletico finished second in La Liga last season, nine points behind Griezmann's new club. He also won the Europa League, the UEFA Super Cup and the Spanish Super Cup in that time.
