Chargers' Gordon wants trade if no deal

Chargers' Gordon wants trade if no deal

Unfortunately, a bit of drama has surfaced with word that star running back Melvin Gordon will not report to training camp without realizing his financial dreams.

Gordon, who was the No. 15 overall pick of the 2015 National Football League draft, is entering the final year of his rookie contract, which calls for him to earn $5.6 million this season.

That's the 11th-highest salary at the position for 2019, though it's tied to his draft position via the collective bargaining agreement.

Gordon will also demand a trade from the team if he does not get a new deal, Schefter added.

Given that as a running back this could be Gordon's one big multi-year extension, he doesn't want to risk losing that opportunity - if gets hurt without that safety net, it would likely affect any potential deal in 2020.

According to Schefter, "Smith said Gordon is dug in and discouraged with the lack of progress in the talks". We're going to see.

He was also asked about possibly not playing in 2019 without a new deal.

After not scoring a touchdown as a rookie in 14 games, Gordon has 28 rushing touchdowns and 10 receiving touchdowns over the past three seasons. "When it does, I'm pretty sure you guys will know".

The two-time Pro Bowler has led the Chargers in rushing yards every year since being selected in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft.

The 26-year old has earned Pro Bowl honors in two of his four seasons thus far, including last season in which he rushed for 885 yards and 10 touchdowns in 12 games.
