Facebook may be looking for major VR exclusives

Imagine seeing through the eyes of Sam Fisher in a way you've never experienced before; first-person, with full freedom of movement and with the realism that only VR can bring.

People familiar with the matter told The Information that Facebook is hoping this deal will "attract more people" to its VR headsets - that's probably a safe bet, given the massive popularity of both of these franchises.

Facebook had acquired VR-based company Oculus almost five years back and has since been investing in it to make it the future of VR gaming.

One part of this strategy involves working with major developers and publishers to give some of the most popular franchises in the industry the VR treatment.

Facebook is one of the biggest social media platforms in the world, and it's also been moving into gaming in recent years.

By acquiring more studios and titles, Facebook just might be able to secure the Oculus VR's place in VR gaming for along time.

Splinter Cell could return to the market thanks to Facebook. I'm not sure if the company would be willing to take the risk of releasing the next mainline Assassin's Creed or Splinter Cell title exclusively in VR, but it's possible that they could have a secondary team work on a smaller title. It's unclear if the games will come to other popular headsets in the future.

Jason Rubin, former head of content at Oculus and current Vice President of Special Gaming Initiatives is said to be spearheading the effort. If whatever lands on Oculus VR is a very good and fully formed Assassin's Creed game, it could be a big step forward.

Facebook initially ramped up its VR efforts in 2019 with this year's release of the standalone Oculus Quest, which starts at $399 (£314, though the RRP in the United Kingdom is £399).
