NY power outage knocks out subways, businesses, lifts

Saturday's outage occurred on the 42nd anniversary of a NY blackout that crippled the city during a heat wave on July 13, 1977. The photo was taken from Jersey City, New Jersey.

Power went out early Saturday evening at much of Rockefeller Center and reached the Upper West Side, according to the ConEd Outage Map.

The New York Fire Department said it was tackling a fire in an electrical transformer in Manhattan, the most densely populated of the city's five boroughs. De Blasio did not indicate where the fire occurred or if anyone was injured.

New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo said he was sending 100 State Police officers and some National Guard troops to the city to help with traffic control.

Officials with Con Edison later tweeted that they were working to restore electricity to customers and businesses primarily on Manhattan's Upper West Side.

It took place on the anniversary of the 1977 "Blackout" power cut that affected virtually the entirety of NY in the midst of an economic crisis.

Power was not restored until the next day.

A number of Saturday night shows were delayed, with theatregoers left waiting in the streets outside venues.

Shortly before 8 p.m local time., an update said that local trains were running on the 1/2/3 lines.

The outage also saw some Broadway shows cancel their Saturday evening performances, including Best Musical Tony victor Hadestown and King Kong.

At Rockefeller Center, traffic lights were out.

NY has endured large-scale blackouts before, most recently following Superstorm Sandy in 2012 as well as the widespread 2003 blackout across the U.S. Northeast that left most of the city without power for a day.
