Ohio’s first measles case of 2019 confirmed in Stark County

Amy Acton said Friday the Stark County resident who got sick with measles had recently traveled to a state with confirmed measles cases.

"Vaccinations save lives, period".

In May, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported the number of measles cases this year had climbed to 839 in 23 states, affecting mostly unvaccinated people.

Canton City Health Commissioner James Adams, who is not involved with this investigation but spoke about measles investigations generally, said a health department will do follow-up to determine the vaccination status of the person who has measles and the vaccination status of his or her family members or other close contacts.

Cases nationwide have spiked to more than 1,000 this year, the highest annual total since 1992. "If someone is contagious, it can live for up to two hours in the air where that person coughed or sneezed".

People carrying measles are often contagious days before showing symptoms and continue spreading the virus for up to four days after a rash appears.

In Israel, Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, Ukraine, and the Philippines, there are now large outbreaks of measles. OH had 382 cases that year.

Officials are monitoring those who may have been in contact with this individual and they are in self-quarantine, Rodriguez says. The rash usually lasts five to six days and begins at the hairline, moves to the face and upper neck, and proceeds down the body.

Complications from measles are more common among children younger than 5 years of age, adults older than 20 years of age, pregnant women, and people with compromised immune systems.

The disease also can cause more serious symptoms, such as such as diarrhea, ear infections, pneumonia, brain infection, seizures and death.

Health officials are urging parents to vaccinate their children this summer, in advance of the school year.
