WHO hails new DRC aid in fight against Ebola

According to the International Health Regulations (IHR) 2005, movement of people from one place to another within the country and between countries is not restricted during disease outbreaks.

The Ebola outbreak in the country recorded back in August, 2018 in two provinces, the epidemic is still spreading.

It also made a decision to authorize the immediate deployment of an AU Mission Against Ebola in DRC (MAEC), comprising medical doctors, laboratory experts, epidemiologists, nurses and other medical and paramedical personnel, as well as security personnel, as required for the protection of the Mission and treatment centers, in close coordination with the relevant DRC authorities and MONUSCO.

More than half of the new cases over recent weeks appeared in the Beni Health Zone, which had already seen high infection rates about one year ago for several weeks, the Geneva-based United Nations agency said.

New healthcare worker and nosocomial infections continue to be reported in Beni and other affected health areas, despite substantial infection prevention and control interventions, with 141 reported so far. The WHO said it is continuously monitoring security issues and implementing mitigation measures to ensure staff safety. Last week the World Health Organization designated it an global emergency, prompted partly by a case in the city of Goma, adjacent to Rwanda, and by a patient who went to a market in Uganda and subsequently died in Congo. It is considered the largest ever outbreak, with cases surpassing 2,500.

The outbreak also presents a serious threat to peace and security in the country, the region and the African continent as a whole, according to an AU statement. The financing package will cover the Ebola-affected health zones in DRC and enable the government, WHO, UNICEF, WFP, IOM and other responders to step up the frontline health response, deliver cash-for-work programs to support the local economy, strengthen resilience in the affected communities, and contain the spread of this deadly virus.

The World Health Organization warned of complicated development of Ebola in Africa especially in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Aceng said Uganda is safe and all national and worldwide travelers are free to travel to and within the country.

Screening has been reinforced at the border crossing between Goma in the DRC and the Rwandan city of Gisenyi, where tens of thousands of people cross each day.
