A day-by-day breakdown of Hurricane Dorian’s unsafe and uncertain path

A day-by-day breakdown of Hurricane Dorian’s unsafe and uncertain path

One of the reasons Dorian is particularly unsafe is the heavy rain it's expected to down over the same areas for a long time. Currently, Dorian is moving at about 10 miles per hour, so it still has plenty of time to gain intensity.

Wind conditions consistent with a hurricane can be expected in the northwestern Bahamas by Sunday, with winds accelerating starting on Saturday night. Leaving mercifully little damage in its wake in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, Hurricane Dorian swirled toward the us, with forecasters warning it will draw energy from the warm, open waters as it closes in. A Hurricane Watch remains in effect for Andros Island. Of concern: there is nothing slowing the storm down from intensifying further.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Saturday that "some strengthening is possible today" for Hurricane Dorian, already a Category 4 storm.

"Beginning with a map of soil moisture to predict possible flooding risks, the team will use satellite data to help communities affected by the storm".

In the Bahamas, Freeport's worldwide airport is set to close Friday night and not reopen until September 3, amid worries Dorian will slam tourist hotspots Grand Bahama and Abaco on Saturday. The models diverge as they approach the Florida Coast. The timing of that shift will determine whether it makes landfall in Florida or if skirts along the coast before striking land somewhere in the Carolinas.

Hurricane Dorian is slowly moving closer to the Bahamas, en route to Florida's east coast.

He said his own Florida residence, Mar-a-Lago, was a "dead center" target of Dorian.

The size of the storm is small, so where it goes will affect the local forecast dramatically.

"This is going to be a big storm".

The storm may pass near or directly over the islands of Abacos and Grand Bahama while moving at a slow forward speed. Heavy rain is likely, though. Polk County may see stronger winds, though.

The 5 p.m. forecast has the storm staying a Category 4 until landfall along the Florida east coast early Tuesday morning.

Hours earlier, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency in 12 counties.

Millions of people in Florida, along with the state's Walt Disney World and President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort, are in the potential crosshairs of the storm.

Most businesses and schools are closed on Labor Day. Major airlines began allowing travelers to change reservations without fees. The big cruise lines began rerouting their ships. Category 4 winds are from 130-156 miles per hour.

"If you're in an evacuation zone and you're ordered to evacuate, please do so", DeSantis said.

Coastal areas of the southeastern United States could get 6 to 12 inches (15 to 30 centimeters) of rain, with 18 inches (46 centimeters) in some places, triggering life-threatening flash floods, the hurricane center said.

Jeff Byard, a FEMA associate administrator, said Dorian could "create a lot of havoc" with infrastructure, power and roads.

Also imperiled were the Bahamas, where canned food and bottled water were disappearing quickly and the sound of hammering echoed across the islands as people boarded up their homes. The National Hurricane Center warned of an increasing likelihood of a life-threatening storm surge along parts of Florida's east coast.

The Bahamas Prime Minister has warned residents they may pay with their life if they choose not to evacuate.

Only one in five Florida nursing homes plans to rely on deliveries of temporary generators to keep their air conditioners running if Dorian knocks out power, a state agency said on Friday, short of the standard set by a law passed after a dozen people died in a sweltering nursing home after 2017's Hurricane Irma.
