'Atmosphere not conducive to play in Pakistan' - AITA

Therefore, the national tennis federation of India can urge the global tennis federation (ITF) to host the Davis Cup match to be held in Islamabad next month at a neutral place and the host federation said it would respect the decision.

With Pakistan partially shutting its air space and then suspending trade ties with India, the Government of India might not be interested in continuing sporting ties.

"We have asked ITF for a neutral venue because the situation is a bit unpredictable", All India Tennis Association (AITA) president Praveen Mahajan told AFP on Sunday.

The country has downgraded diplomatic ties with India after provisions of Article 370, which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir, were done away with and the state was turned into a Union Territory. That is why there is a doubt about India's participation in the Davis Cup to be held in Pakistan. Hong Kong had refused to travel to Pakistan in April, 2017, instead conceding a walkover. "We will observe how the situation is", he said. "In that case, Pakistan will get penalised and the tie will get shifted to a neutral venue", Chatterjee had told ANI. "In the current circumstances, it is not conducive to play there", he said. "But Davis Cup is not a bilateral and is organised by a world sporting body", Rijiju said on the sidelines of an event of the ministry of youth affairs", Kiren Rijiju was reported saying by TOI.

Prajnesh Gunneswaran, Ramkumar Ramanathan, Saketh Myneni, Rohan Bopanna, Divij Sharan and Sasi Kumar Mukund have all been named in the lineup. Pakistan is yet to announce its team.

However, the tennis team is set to rise through the political tensions that cloud the two team's relationships and will become the first Indian Davis Cup team to play in Pakistan since 1964.

The last time Pakistan played on a neutral venue was when it hosted China in Colombo in 2016.

The Davis Cup draw was rolled out in February this year, but after the Pulwama attack on February 14, chances of the Indian tennis team touring Pakistan looked bleak.
