Plastic toiletries at one of the world's largest hotel chains are checking out - for good.

He says the transition in their almost 5 600 hotels around the world will be completed by 2021.

InterContinental Group is eliminating the travel-sized tubes of shampoo, conditioner and bath gel from its 843,000 rooms across its global chain of hotels. "We collectively as an industry have to lead where governments are not necessarily giving the leadership to make a difference", he told the newspaper.

According to CBS News, a third of the conglomerate's 5,600 hotels have already made the switch, and the news release reports IHG is "receiving positive guest feedback on the quality of product and the larger volume on offer". The company's Voco Hotels, Even Hotels, and Avid Hotels brands have used bulk dispensers since the hotels launched.

Richard Clarke, an analyst at research company Bernstein, said: "Rather than reacting to customer outcry over straws, IHG are trying to be proactive and say that they can use this as a differentiator if they can get ahead on it".

The announcement comes after IHG pledged to stop providing plastic straws at its properties by this year, and started using duvets and pillows filled with 100 percent recycled materials at certain brands.

In 2015, the company implemented an online sustainability program that measures and manages indiviudal IHG hotel's impact on the environment called Green Engage.

A study conducted by Hilton a year ago found that one-third of visitors research a hotel's environmental policies before booking, and this number is likely to increase as more people express concern about single-use plastics and pressure retailers to take action.
