Hong Kong's civil unrest: What's driving today's protests?

More than 5000 protesters streamed into one of the world's busiest transport hubs and quickly transformed the arrivals hall into a sea of black. "I will be responsible [for] rebuilding Hong Kong's economy, to listen as attentively as possible to my people's grievances and try to help Hong Kong to move on", she said.

The airport authority also advised the public to avoid trips to the airport, citing traffic congestion and full parking lots.

Calls for a mass protest at the airport came after police and demonstrators fought pitched battles on the streets across several districts of the city on Sunday.

The protests began in opposition to a bill which would have allowed the extradition of Hong Kong residents to the mainland to stand trial.

"All other flights have been canceled for the rest of today", the airport statement said.

Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam warned Tuesday of the unsafe consequences facing the city, one of Asia's most important financial hubs, if escalating violence at the rallies was not curbed.

"We are calling for peace, for order, for dialogue. we certainly call on China to be very careful and very respectful in how it deals with people who have legitimate concerns in Hong Kong", Trudeau told a televised news conference in Toronto.

Authorities had deployed more aggressive tactics during the weekend protests, with riot police videotaped beating demonstrators in subway stations and officers going undercover to infiltrate the group and make arrests. So, what exactly is happening in Hong Kong now and why are people protesting?

In a statement, the airport said operations had been "seriously disrupted" by the public assembly. "Hong Kong has reached an inflection point where all those who are concerned about Hong Kong's future must say "no" to law breakers and "no" to those engaged in violence".

After two months, the protests have become increasingly divisive and prompted clashes across the city.

Anyone planning to travel between Australia and Hong Kong has been urged to check with their airline.

"Violence, no matter if it's using violence or condoning violence, will push Hong Kong down a path of no return, will plunge Hong Kong society into a very worrying and risky situation", Lam said.

Passengers with luggage were being checked in for flights, and only a handful of the thousands of protesters who flooded into the airport a day earlier remained in the building.

Most protesters had left the airport shortly after midnight, with about 50 protesters still there on Tuesday morning.

JP Morgan's DS Kim, Jeremy An and Chrstine Wang similarly refer to "drag from Hong Kong protests and junket related noise" for their concerns, dropping August GGR estimates to a year-on-year decline of between 4% and 6%.

But he said he sympathised with the protesters despite the disruption.

Protesters have said they plan to return to the airport later in the day to resume their demonstrations. "I felt like I was walking around and nobody gave us information".
