Hurricane Dorian intensifies into unsafe category 4 ahead Florida landfall

Recent weather models from the National Hurricane Center show it smacking into the centre of the state.

The risk of risky storm surge and devastating hurricane-force winds for Florida residents is increasing, although it is too soon to determine exactly where and when these hazards will occur. "Residents should have their hurricane plan in place, know if they are in a hurricane evacuation zone, and listen to advice given by local emergency officials". "There's been a notable trend on this model cycle toward a slower, more westward track", said Hurricane Specialist Eric Blake. But because of the difficulty of predicting its course this far ahead, the "cone of uncertainty" covered almost the entire state.

"One of the biggest concerns with a slow-moving hurricane like Dorian is that the risky weather will last a few days - that's strong winds, heavy rainfall and storm surge", said FOX 35 Meteorologist Kristin Giannas.

Northeast Florida, rather than southeast Florida, now seems like it would be more likely to experience hurricane conditions.

Rainfall predicted due to Dorian over the next week.

Swells are likely to begin affecting the east-facing shores of the Bahamas and the southeastern United States coast during the next few days.

Florida residents were bracing for a hurricane on Thursday that was threatening to smack into the center of the state over the Labor Day weekend, and President Donald Trump said it appeared the storm's winds would be "unbelievably high". But even here, there is large uncertainty in the storm track and scenarios range from a direct hit to a close miss. "Floridians need to take this storm seriously".

Despite the uncertainty in Dorian's track and its specific impacts along the Southeast U.S. coast, confidence is high that the northwestern Bahamas face a punishing hit from the storm.

The latest track from the NHC has Dorian strengthening to a Category 4 storm, moving over the Northwestern Bahamas Sunday and Monday, and slowing down considerably as it approaches the state with sustained winds of 140 miles per hour (225.31 km/h).

"Hurricane #Dorian is moving slowly & gaining strength".

As of 8 a.m. Saturday, the storm was centered 280 miles east of the northwestern Bahamas, headed west at 12 mph.

The tropical storm is forecast to make landfall in the Sunshine State late this weekend. The storm hours earlier had winds of about 130 mph (215 kph). The lower the pressure, the more intense the storm. High pressure, which spins clockwise, acts as a steering mechanism for storms like Dorian. The slow motion of the storm as it approaches Florida spells more trouble.

Mr Trump cancelled a visit to Poland scheduled for the weekend and Florida's governor expanded a state of emergency to prepare for Hurricane Dorian, which is forecast to make landfall on the Atlantic coast on Monday as a unsafe Category Four storm.

Hurricane Dorian is strengthening in the Atlantic Ocean and is whipping out winds of 105mph, making it a Category 2 hurricane on the Saffir Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.
