ISRO performs 3rd lunar-bound orbit manoeuvre for Chandrayaan-2

ISRO performs 3rd lunar-bound orbit manoeuvre for Chandrayaan-2

The lowering of orbit began 09:04 am this morning and took close to 20 minutes. The orbit achieved is 179 km x 1412 km distance said ISRO. "The next Lunar bound orbit maneuver is scheduled on August 30, 2019 between 1800 - 1900 hrs IST", it said.

The third lunar bound orbit maneuver for Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft was performed successfully on Wednesday using the onboard propulsion system, ISRO stated.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said it completed the third orbit action lasting almost 20 minutes to bring the spacecraft closer to the Moon. It also posted a picture stating the countdown of 11 days to go.

The propulsion system on board the orbiter of Chandrayaan 2 was sacked for 1,190 seconds at 09:04 am on Wednesday to bring the spacecraft down to an elliptical orbit of 179 x 1,412 kms, the Isro said in a statement.

The Chandrayaan 2 composite has carried out three successful in-orbit manueovres out of four since it entered lunar orbit - all in an attempt to lower its altitude in preparation to land. With this, Chandrayaan-2 was successfully inserted into a Lunar orbit.

The final burn is scheduled for September 1 to bring the spacecraft into a circular orbit close to a 100x100 km orbit.

On 2 September, the lander would separate from the Orbiter and enter into a 100 km X 30 km orbit around the Moon.

Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft with lander Vikram and rover Pragyan was launched on-board a heavy rocket (GSLV Mark III) on July 22 from ISRO's rocket port at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh off the Bay of Bengal coast, about 90km north of Chennai.

The health of the spacecraft is being continuously monitored from the Mission Operations Complex (MOX) at ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) in Bengaluru with support from Indian Deep Space Network (IDSN) antennas at Bylalu, near Bengaluru, the space agency has said.

Two more burns or the firing of the propulsion system will happen to reduce the apolune or the point at which a spacecraft in lunar orbit is furthest from the moon.
