Mike Perry's Nose Shattered in Split Decision Defeat

Perry's face was nearly unrecognisable after receiving a vicious flying knee to the face from his opponent, Vicente Luque, late in the bout at UFC Uruguay on Sunday (NZT).

The judges saw the contest 29-28, 28-29, 29-28 for Luque, but Perry has been praised for continuing to fight despite the gruesome injury. Luque started slowly but with time, Luque got himself going. Perry tried to be creative with his angles and combinations. In the second round, Luque came back strongly.

The third round was where the fight was decided.

Mike Perry's nose got so broken, twisted, and mangled he was taken to hospital after a UFC fight Saturday. Despite a mediocre UFC record, Perry is one of the most popular fighters in the sport right now as he always puts on a good show for the fans and is also very quotable.

UFC shared a footage of Luque's post match interview on YouTube after the fight had finished.

While Luque was crowned the victor, the damage to Perry's nose wasn't entirely for nothing-the match was named Fight of the Night and both men walked away with an extra $50,000.

The injury was so bad Perry was taken to hospital for a CT scan because "he was apparently having some trouble breathing after the fight for obvious reasons", MMA Fighting reporter Damon Martin tweeted.

Perry underwent successful nose surgery in Uruguay on Sunday, his manager Abraham Kawa told ESPN.

Perry, meanwhile, is expected to stay in Montevideo for at least a couple days before returning home.
