Newsday, A new case of Ebola is confirmed in Uganda

Dr Eddy Kasenda, Ebola representative in the Congolese border town of Kasindi, said the victim will be repatriated to DR Congo.

"In total, there have been 2 006 deaths (1 901 confirmed and 105 probable)", officials said in a bulletin dated Thursday.

According to Uganda's health ministry Twitter account, the 9-year-old DRC girl died today, and plans are under way to send her body back to the DRC for a safe and dignified burial, as requested by her father.

Although the highly infectious disease has proved stubborn to contain inside Congo, cross-border contamination has been rare.

The World Health Organization declared the outbreak a public health emergency of global concern made more complicated by instability and mistrust in the Congolese government.

The current Ebola epidemic, categorized by the World Health Organization as International Public Health Emergency in July, has affected more children than in any other previous outbreak, and the virus "ravages children in ways that are very different from adults", UNICEF pointed out.

The disease is spread by contact with infected bodily fluids and is fought with the time-honoured but laborious techniques of tracing contacts and quarantining them.

The girl was identified at a border screening on Wednesday as a possible Ebola patient and isolated.

Uganda has been declared Ebola-free but in June three people from one family died there from the haemorrhagic fever after crossing back from DR Congo.

The organisation added that most of the cases were reported in North Kivu province.

The virus was first identified in 1976 when outbreaks occurred near the Ebola River in Congo.

The new case is likely to heighten fears of the outbreak, which has largely been confined to eastern DRC, spilling over into neighbouring countries.

Despite efforts to stem the epidemic ravaging the Democratic Republic of the Congo, 3,004 people have been infected with the virus and 2,006 people have died, Congolese authorities said in a report.

So far, over 5,500 people in Uganda including frontline health workers and other workers and community people have been vaccinated against Ebola. "Building strong systems is what will protect people, communities, and the world".

Dr Tedros will accompany UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on his mission to the country this weekend, along with senior officials, including Dr Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa.
