Russian fighter wards off NATO jet nearing minister's plane

In this video grab taken from a footage on August 13, 2019, and distributed by Russian Defense Ministry Press Service, a view of Russian air force's Su-27 fighter jet, seen from the window of a passenger plane carrying Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu over the Baltic Sea.

In this case the aircraft dispatched to intercept and shadow the aircraft is a Spanish Air Force EF-18, one of the 5 jets now deployed to Siauliai Air Base, Lithuania, for BAP mission.

On Tuesday, the Russian military reported that a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation jet snuck up to the defence minister's airliner over neutral waters in the Baltic Sea as he and other defence staff made their way to Moscow from Russia's Kaliningrad region.

"NATO's F-18 fighter attempted to approach Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu's aircraft, the Russian Su-27 drove it away from Shoigu's aircraft over the Baltic Sea", the TV channel said. The Russian Su-27 carries a pair of R-27 and R-73 AAMs, although the exact type and number of missiles is not clear in the footage (as the aircraft turns away from the camera).

However, the Spanish Air Force has not yet independently spoken on the issue although its fighters take part in NATO's Baltic Air Policing missions.

The Russian Defense Minister was flying from Moscow to Kaliningrad where he attended the Nakhimov Naval Academy expansion stone-laying ceremony and the Seaborne Assault competition at the Khmelevka proving ground in which over two dozen countries are taking part.

The F/A-18 Hornet by McDonnell Douglas is a multirole fighter which has been extensively used by the USA and many of its allies throughout the years.
