Security Council calls for immediate cessation of hostilities in Ebola outbreak areas

It is highly contagious and often fatal.

Rwandan health ministry on July 15 warned Rwandans against unnecessary travel to Goma, which shares the border with western Rwanda's Rubavu district with daily border crossings between the two countries estimated at about 100,000 people.

"The border was by no means closed and it isn't closed", Diane Gashumba informed reporters as she sat subsequent to the state minister of overseas affairs, Olivier Nduhungirehe, who earlier stated it was shut.

The confirmation of a third case in Goma earlier in the day sparked fears the virus could take root in the densely populated city, which is located more than 350km (220 miles) south of where the outbreak was first detected.

Some 45,000 people go through the main border post between the two per day, according to an immigration official. Health workers represent 5% of Ebola cases in this outbreak, and 41 have died from their infections. The patient is the wife of the second Goma case and mother of the third - a one-year-old baby, World Health Organisation (WHO) coordinator Boubacar Diallo said.

"We are carrying out investigations", he added.

The man died on Wednesday after he sought treatment too late and was already bleeding, authorities said.

Researchers in Uganda are set to introduce a second experimental Ebola vaccine to the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo, where the virus has claimed more than 1,800 lives in the past year. The patient, who had travelled from Butembo to Goma, was admitted to the MSF-supported Ebola Treatment Centre in Goma.

Congolese authorities were racing to contain an Ebola epidemic on Thursday, after a gold miner with a large family contaminated several people in the east's main city of Goma before dying of the hemorrhagic fever, officials said.

The declaration of a global health emergency - the fifth in history - brought a surge of millions of dollars in new pledges by worldwide donors but some health workers say a new approach is needed to combat misunderstandings in the community. It was earlier reluctant to do so, partly out of fear countries bordering Congo might shut their frontiers.

The current outbreak is centered in the northeast of the country.

As a result, only two Ebola deaths have been reported in neighbouring Uganda, and there have been no registered cases in Rwanda. People can get EVD through direct contact with an infected animal, such as a bat or nonhuman primate, or a sick or dead person infected with Ebola virus, says the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The latest health care workers include a case in Mambasa (non-vaccinated), Vuhovi (vaccinated), and Beni (vaccinated).
