Serena Williams leaves tournament final injured

I just can´t play today. "I felt like I wanted to be fair for me to maybe try and get a couple of matches in before making a decision like that".

Yesterday, she defeated Serena Williams in the championship match of the Rogers Cup when Williams was unable to answer the bell for the fifth game of the opening set with Andreescu leading 3-1.

"Serena, you made me cry". I know how she feels because I've done that many times in my short career.

"I always want to win".

"But you're truly a champion, I've watched you play so many times. I told her that she's a beast as she's gonna bounce back", Andreescu said. It's a dream come true. Williams was overheard explaining to her opponent that injury began Saturday night.

After Williams withdrew from the game she broke down in tears.

During the award ceremony, 37-year-old Williams acknowledged the Toronto fans for their warm applause.

On the men's side, Milos Raonic retired after two sets against Felix Auger-Aliassime in a much-anticipated all-Canadian matchup.

The 19-year-old Andreescu, from nearby Mississauga, Ontario, has victories over seven of the top 10 players in the world.

Andreescu jumped up to No. 14 in Monday's newest WTA Tour world rankings, and to No. 8 in the Race to Shenzhen rankings, which will determine the eight players who get to compete in the year-end WTA Finals.

Accolades for the 19-year-old have been flooding in from around the globe after Andreescu won the Rogers Cup on Sunday in Toronto. Her previous high was 22nd.

Andreescu claimed her second WTA Premier level title of the year, having rocketed to prominence in March when she became the first wild card to win at Indian Wells. "This week hasn't been easy on it, so I'm going to listen to it". And I was always anxious, 'What will I do with myself without tennis?' But actually, once I got rid of the pain, I realised I didn't really need tennis. I tried, but I couldn't.

Williams' misfortune meant Andreescu became the first home victor of the WTA Premier tournament since Faye Urban in 1969, and though the triumph came under mitigating circumstances, it has also extended an extraordinary run for the Canadian.
