Tim Willits leaves id Software and becomes CEO of Saber Interactive

Tim Willits, one of the original pillars of id Software, has traded in his BFG to work on smaller-scale projects at Saber Interactive. "It was a good time to move over".

Being with a studio for 24 years, it's really hard to leave.

Id Software's former studio head, Tim Willits has joined World War Z developer Saber Interactive.

Willits described the difficulty in leaving a studio he has been with for so many years, but is clearly excited by what the future brings at Saber. "It's nearly like a marriage, for lack of a better description...."

Tim Willits has announced through a post on Twitter that he became the CEO of Saber Interactive, effective August 1.

"The agility of smaller teams and the opportunity to do things quickly can not be underestimated". Adding, "I'm not saying anything bad about Bethesda - I love them - but smaller teams are exciting and fun".

Interestingly, Willits said that the opportunity to work on non-shooter was a big part of what attracted him to Saber. When someone has a good idea, we jump on board and develop it. In a statement to Fortune, he likened the ending of his time at the Doom and Quake studio to the ending of a long marriage. In a brief tweet on his personal Twitter account, Willits said that whilst he's been "extremely lucky to work with the best people in the industry on truly awesome games", he "decided to leave id Software after QuakeCon". If it doesn't work, we change it quickly. I have nothing to prove, I have been successful, I have made good games. In the end, what I will do is literally go around the world to work with teams fantastic and create video games.

World War Z is now available for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. "Why would I pass this up?"
