Who is Ghislaine Maxwell? Epstein's death shifts focus to former girlfriend

On Aug. 10, just hours after news reports revealed Epstein's death, Metcalfe indicated on Facebook that he didn't believe Epstein died of suicide, and then implied the government isn't legitimate and shouldn't be trusted. That's what our attorney general, our great attorney general, is doing.

Dr. Barbara Sampson said a city medical examiner performed the autopsy Sunday while a private pathologist observed the examination at the request of Epstein's representatives.

Epstein, 66, was denied bail and faced up to 45 years in prison on federal sex trafficking and conspiracy charges.

"We will get to the bottom of what happened at the MCC and we will hold people accountable for this failure", the attorney-general said.

In February, the Justice Department asked the Office of Inspector General to review whether the Bureau of Prisons responded appropriately to a week-long power outage at the facility that left inmates shivering and led defence lawyers to sue over what they described as a "humanitarian crisis".

Add to this the questionable circumstances of Epstein's original alleged suicide attempt - during which he was confined to a cell with Nicholas Tartaglione, a former cop awaiting trial for quadruple homicide and who was caught with a cellphone weeks before Epstein's arrival - and a conspiratorial web practically weaves itself.

According to the report, federal prisons routinely face shortages of fully-trained guards and have been known staff under-qualified workers.

That person wasn't authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Federal prosecutors in NY reopened the probe after investigative reporting by The Miami Herald stirred outrage over that plea bargain.

Last month, Epstein was found unconscious on the floor of his jail cell with marks on his neck, and officials were investigating that incident as a possible suicide or assault. Under that 2008 agreement, Epstein pleaded guilty to prostitution-related state charges and served 13 months behind bars.

"This sex trafficking case was very important to the Department of Justice and to me personally", Barr also said, noting it was also important to agents working on it and to victims "who had the courage to come forward and deserve the opportunity to confront the accused in the courtroom".

A day before Epstein's apparent suicide, a federal appeals court released nearly 2,000 pages of documents relating to Epstein and his former girlfriend, Ghislaine Maxwell.

Sigrid McCawley, Giuffre's attorney, said Epstein's suicide less than 24 hours after the documents were unsealed "is no coincidence".

A defence attorney for Epstein, Marc Fernich, also faulted jail officials, saying they "recklessly put Mr. Epstein in harm's way" and failed to protect him. Two other staffers were placed on leave.

He was later pronounced dead from an apparent suicide, the BOP said. In the federal system, suicides are rarer.

The MCC's sister federal lockup - the Metropolitan Detention Centre in Brooklyn, which houses more than 1,600 inmates - has had its own troubles in recent years.

This story has been corrected to show Epstein was found unresponsive Saturday morning, not Saturday night.

Sisak reported from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Balsamo from Savannah, Georgia.
