Beto O'Rourke Accuses Lawmaker of Death Threat With AR-15 Tweet

A Republican lawmaker in Texas is in the spotlight after tweeting a threatening message to Democratic presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke following Thursday night's Democratic debate.

The Guardian reports: 'Earlier, Cain, a 34-year-old "conservative Republican" lawyer who represents a district outside of Houston, Texas, had mocked Twitter users who called his comment a threat of violence. O'Rourke, a former congressman from El Paso, touted his proposed mandatory buyback program for assault weapons at the debate and said "hell yes" he plans to take Americans' AR-15s and AK-47s.

Cain, referring to O'Rourke's legal name, wrote: "My AR is ready for you, Robert Francis".

Within hours, Twitter took down Briscoe Cain's post, which O'Rourke's campaign labeled a "death threat".

O'Rourke called the tweet "a death threat" underscoring the danger of such weapons. "If you purchased that AR-15, if you own it, keep it".

Cain shot back: "You're a child Robert Francis".

Cain did not immediately respond to a request for comment. After the attack, O'Rourke left the campaign trail to meet with victims of the shooting, and he has since delivered sharp commentary on gun control. At Thursday night's primary debate, he said "hell yes" he would take those guns.

"In case you forgot, people were just killed in El Paso", responded Mary E. Gonzales, a Democratic member of the Texas House.

The O'Rourke campaign reported the tweet to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, a campaign spokesperson told the Guardian.

Since O'Rourke's run for Senate, there have been several mass shootings in the USA, including in El Paso, which he has said has changed his view on gun control. In that massacre, a white gunman targeting Hispanic people used an AK-47 to fatally shoot 22 people in an El Paso Walmart.

An outspoken supporter of Second Amendment rights, Cain was kicked out of the Texas Democratic Party convention in 2018 after he showed up with what appeared to be a sidearm and began handing out fake yard signs that said, "This home is a gun-free safe space", the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.
