Family denies feud with government over Mugabe burial

Mr Mugabe, 95, a controversial leader who ruled his country for nearly 40 years, will lie in state at two different locations in the capital of Harare.

Leo Mugabe, Mugabe's nephew, who is the spokesperson for the family confirmed this to Zimlive, a Zimbabwean media outfit.

Police escorting the vehicle Wednesday morning said the convoy was heading to the airport. Mugabe who swept to power after Zimbabwe's independence from Britain and went on to rule for 37 years until he was ousted in 2017, died on Friday, aged 95.

Reserved. The grave of Sarah Francesca "Sally" Mugabe, the first wife of Robert Mugabe is seen next to two un-occupied graves at the National Heroes Acre in Harare, Zimbabwe September 10, 2019.

Zimbabwe's Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said his body will lie in state at Rufaro Stadium and then at the National Sports Stadium for a total of three days.

The body is expected in the country this Wednesday, with burial set for Sunday 15 September. In private, they say the feud with Mugabe's family could have been handled better.

The family of Mugabe was pushing back against the government's plan to bury him at the National Heroes Acre monument in Harare and wants him to be buried in his home village instead, relatives had told Reuters.

But Mugabe is believed to have told his family that he wanted to be buried quietly with his mother, denying the politicians and generals who toppled him in 2017 the chance to "pontificate" over his dead body.

It is reported that Grace will advise the family on the last wishes of Mugabe.

Zimbabwe government protocol says that Mnangagwa does not attend national heroes' burials held away from the Heroes Acre.

But in a memo sent to embassies in Harare on Sunday, it encouraged foreign heads of state to leave immediately after the funeral service wraps up on Saturday. The mood at the service was "sombre, everybody is sad", said Molai. Mnangagwa's spokesman George Charamba could not be reached for comment.
