First de-orbiting manoeuvre successful

After crossing a major milestone on 2 September, the landing module of the Indian Space Research Organisation's second mission to the moon, Chandrayaan 2, is expected to make its first in-orbit adjustment between 8.45-9.45 am IST. On September 4, the health of all the sensors and payloads of Vikram Lander will be examined by September 6, after changing the moon's orbit for the second time, i.e. after reaching the moon's closest orbit. "The orbit of Vikram Lander is 104 km x 128 km". Now, the lander is orbiting at an identical 119 x 127 km elliptical orbit to the orbiter.

The fifth and final lunar orbit manoeuvre was carried out on Sunday.

The module has reached a distance of about 100km from the moon's surface, the space agency said. Vikram will land on the lunar surface on 7 September.

The landing module of India's unmanned moon mission separated successfully from the orbiter on Monday in the run-up to its planned touchdown on the moon's south polar region this weekend, the country's space agency said. Chandrayaan-2 Orbiter continues to orbit the Moon in the existing orbit and both the Orbiter and Lander are healthy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself will be present at ISRO headquarters to witness the event of Chandrayaan-2 landing on the lunar surface.

A successful mission will make India the fourth country after Russian Federation, the U.S. and China to pull off a soft landing on the moon.

The mission includes four components: a GSLV Mk-III, an orbiter, a lander; and the small rover. This will be followed by the Rover roll out between 5:30 am to 6:30 am. However, Sivan said, "We can not assure you that it will happen".

While the battery will be exhausted after 14 days, if other systems are intact, once the next lunar day begins, the rover and lander could recharge their power systems and resume their work.
