First Deaths From Hurricane Dorian Confirmed in Bahamas

At least 1 million people have been ordered to evacuate in three US states beginning Monday ahead of Hurricane Dorian, a slow-moving Category 4 storm now raging over the Bahamas.

Regardless of the exact track of Dorian's center, life-threatening storm surge and risky hurricane-force winds are expected along portions of the Florida east coast and the coasts of Georgia and SC.

The exact toll of the devastation in the Bahamas will not be clear until the storm passes and rescue crews can get on the ground.

Prime Minister Hubert Minnis has confirmed at least five deaths on the Bahamas' Abaco Island, calling the destruction in the northern Bahamas "unprecedented and extensive". North of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, up to South Santee River, South Carolina, is under a hurricane watch.

Dorian has been pounding the Bahamas for days, killing at least five people in the Abaco Islands in the northern Bahamas and inundating homes with floodwater ahead of its expected advance on the US coast, where more than a million people have been ordered evacuated.

The storm made landfall at Elbow Cay on Great Abaco Island at 12:40 p.m. EDT Sunday and made a second landfall on Grand Bahama several hours later. A tree fell and destroyed his mother's auto, and he said his aunt has 15 feet of water flooding her home.

Many people in Grand Bahama have been forced to flee to the roofs of their homes to escape the rising floodwaters.

Storm surges are caused when huge volumes of water are pushed by hurricane-force winds. When they meet land, the water surges inshore at levels far exceeding normal tides.

The eastern USA states are also bracing for possible storm surges.

There is still some uncertainty in Dorian's forecast track.

"All it has to do is jog a little bit west and you have a full-on hurricane rolling through Florida", he said.

Meanwhile, in Middle Georgia, we are expecting just a passing chance of a storm in our southern counties through the next few days.

Evacuations have been ordered in some coastal communities of SC and Georgia. On Saturday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis warned residents along the state's Atlantic coast that "we're not out of the woods yet".

Millions have been ordered to evacuate across Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas as states of emergency have been declared.

Hurricane Dorian could cause insurance industry losses of up to $25bn (€23.8bn), according to analysts at UBS. It is the fifth Atlantic hurricane to reach the highest category in the last four years.

As of daybreak, Dorian's winds had dipped to 120 miles per hour (193 kph), making it a still highly unsafe Category 3 hurricane, and the storm was barely moving at 1 miles per hour (2 kph), with part of its eyewall hanging over Grand Bahama Island since Sunday night.

If the hurricane remains along the coast, coastal flooding erosion will be likely.

"I was all set to stay home until they had to turn the water off", said Watson, who added she was not anxious for her personal safety but hoped the storm spared the retirement community.

Warm air rises into the storm.
