GM recalls over 3.4M pickups, SUVs over brake issues

GM is recalling almost 3.5 million of its Chevy, GMC, and Cadillac trucks and SUVs over brake problems following an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that started in November.

Chevrolet Suburban - There are 202,634 of this vehicle with model years ranging from 2015 to 2018 included in the recall.

As the pumps in the power-assist brakes put out less vacuum power than is needed, "customers may experience increased brake pedal effort, hard brake pedal, and/or potentially increased stopping distance".

The NHTSA opened a preliminary investigation into the issue last November, and said it had reports of nine related crashes and two injuries.

"Dealers will reprogram the electronic brake control module in these vehicles with a new calibration that will improve how the system utilizes the hydraulic brake boost assist function when vacuum assist is depleted", Flores said. Owners were to be notified starting September 6.

GM discovered the problem and reported it to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, according to the report.

The vacuum pump is lubricated with engine oil that flows through a filter screen. Thus, the remedy will involve a tweak to the secondary power brake assist system with a reprogramming, which kicks in if the vehicle detects a problem with the main system.

The agency has been investigating the problem for 10 months.

GMC Yukon - The GM recall 2019 covers 296,748 GMC Yukon vehicles with model years from 2015 to 2018. He said he didn't know the cost.

GM began investigating previous year after getting higher than normal warranty claims for engine control computer replacements.
