Google Earth search leads to body of Florida man missing since 1997

The body has now been confirmed to be William Earl Moldt, who was reported missing on 8 November, 1997, after he failed to return from a night out in Lantana, Florida, when he was 40 years old.

A missing mans remains were finally found after a Google Earth user noticed a vehicle submerged in a lake.

It took more than two decades, but a missing man's remains have been found after a submerged auto was spotted on Google Earth.

According to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System, Moldt left a nightclub alone around 11 the night before he was reported missing.

When officers arrived at the scene, they confirmed a auto was in the pond.

According to deputies, a previous resident who had lived in the Grand Isles community in Wellington was searching around on Google Earth when he noticed what appeared to be a vehicle in a retainer pond behind a house.

Moldt's remains were found August 28 after a former resident saw the auto in the pond, the sheriff's office said. Using his personal drone, the current resident confirmed there was a vehicle in the pond and contacted police. Palm Beach Sheriff's deputies found Moldt's remains inside the auto after someone reported they had seen the vehicle via Google Earth.

"I called the former owner of my house and asked if she knew about this", Fay said. Police confirmed his findings and said the vehicle was heavily calcified and appeared to have been under water for a very long time.

If investigators can use the data to identify a specific device they think may belong to a suspect or witness, Google will reveal their name, email and other info, according to the report.

According to the Charley Project, which profiles unsolved missing people cases in the U.S., Grand Isles at Wellington was under construction at the time of Moldt's disappearance.

Moldt, 40, was reported missing November 8, 1997.

"You can't determine what happened that many years ago, what transpired", police spokeswoman Therese Barbera said. "We said, 'About 9 years, ' and they said, 'Did you realize that there was a auto in the lake?'" Martin said, ABC 7 reported.
