Gracia opens up on ‘surprise’ Watford sacking

Cape Town - Manager Javi Gracia has refused to criticise Watford after the "unexpected announcement" of his sacking on Saturday.

Javi Gracia is sacked by Watford for picking up just one point from the first four league games of the new campaign. My gratefullness and love for this club will be eternal.

Watford lost their first three games and then managed a draw last time out at Newcastle but they are bottom of the table and, heading into the global break, the pressure was building on Gracia. Flores quit Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua last month, citing personal reasons.

Quique Sanchez Flores' return to Vicarage Road makes him their 12th manager since 2010.

"Javi has represented Watford with great dignity and will always be deserving of our fullest respect for his achievements", said Watford Chairman and CEO Scott Duxbury".

It just took the club 15 minutes to announce Gracia's replacement after announcing he was leaving the club on Saturday.

At that time the club were able to exercise a break clause in his contract at the end of a season in which Flores had guided Watford to 13th place, their best league finish for 29 years, and an FA Cup semi-final. But even before that game there were concerns, with three defeats in the previous four games, and the club have not won since April 20, when they were seventh in the Premier League.

The Hornets are bottom of the English Premier League with only one point from four matches, having lost to Brighton & Hove Albion (3-0), Everton (1-0) and West Ham (3-1), before a 1-1 draw at Newcastle United.
