Major League Baseball world reacts to Christian Yelich’s brutal injury

The Brewers are now without their MVP.

During the first inning of their 4-3 victory over the Miami Marlins, star outfielder Christian Yelich fouled an 80 miles per hour slider hard off his kneecap. The team later announced his season was over. "He'll need some further diagnostic imaging tomorrow in Milwaukee, then (he'll) meet with our doctors and plot a plan going forward". He incurred the injury after fouling a ball off his knee in the first inning. He went straight to the ground and stayed there for a while before gingerly walking off the field on his own power.

After the game, Brewers President of Baseball Operations and General Manager David Stearns called the injury a "gut punch".

Manager Craig Counsell said Yelich was "crushed" upon hearing the diagnosis, according to MLB.com's Christina De Nicola. "He's a special player and it's a joy to watch him play every day".

"We feel very bad for Christian", Counsell said.

Yelich, the reigning NL MVP, is once again in the running for the MVP Award. The outfielder was leading the majors in slugging percentage and OPS when he was hurt.
