N.Korea: Rocket launcher test carried out on Tues

The missile tests also come at a time of increasing friction between Japan and South Korea, two key U.S. allies in the region.

The projectiles were launched in an easterly direction from an inland area in the South Pyongan Province, the South's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said without providing further details, such as the type of the projectiles, flight range and maximum altitude. Tuesday's firing was the 10th weapon test North Korea has conducted this year.North Korea had first fired multiple short-range missiles in May, in what was an apparent frustration over the breakdown of the Hanoi summit in Vietnam in February, where the reclusive country and the United States had reportedly failed to sort out their differences regarding sanction waivers.

North Korea has now launched weapons on eight occasions since July 25, as negotiations with the United States have stalled over the scope of the reclusive country's denuclearization, and the amount of sanctions relief to be granted in return.

"We are informed of reports of projectiles launched from North Korea", a senior United States official explained.

The projectiles traveled about 330 kilometers, the statement said, adding that US and South Korean authorities are analyzing additional details the launch.

Analysts say the short-range missiles being tested threaten United States troops deployed in northeast Asia and citizens living in US-allied countries like South Korea and Japan.

The leaders agreed to resume working-level talks during their impromptu meeting on June 30 on the Korean border, but no date has been set.

But Choe said the United States has to produce an "acceptable calculation" or risk the end of the talks, apparently a statement aimed at pushing the United States toward making concessions to North Korea, such as on the economic sanctions.

The comments came a day after Secretary of State Mike Pompeo expressed hope that talks with the North Koreans would resume "in the coming days, or perhaps weeks".

When asked by AFP about the most current North Korean supply, a Condition Division official replied: "We never have any conferences to announce at this time".

North Korea offered Monday to restart stalled nuclear negotiations with the USA later this month but warned "dealings may come to an end" if the Americans don't bring something new to the table.

"We'll see what happens, but I always say having meetings is a good thing", he told reporters.

Kim and US President Donald Trump adopted a vaguely-worded statement on the "complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula" at their first summit in Singapore in June previous year, but little progress has since been made on dismantling Pyongyang's nuclear program.

The period suggested by North Korea would correspond with the United Nations Standard Assembly in NY.

Trump returned from Singapore to Washington tweeting, "There is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea".

Although Trump has given a pass to the North on its shorter-range weapons tests despite a United Nations ban, Tokyo has been outspoken in its condemnation of the launches.
