New Zealand PM apologises over party's handling of sexual assault complaints

Ardern said an appeal process led by a QC, established in August after Newshub revealed dissatisfaction with the party's original investigation into the allegations, was meant to resolve the matter and provide the Prime Minister with assurances that appropriate victim support and advocacy services had been put in place for the complainants. She said correspondence from complainants had confirmed the allegations "were extremely serious, that the process caused complainants additional distress, and that ultimately, in my view, the party was never equipped to appropriately deal with the issue".

The complaints were about the behaviour of a Labour staffer, including allegations of sexual assault, bullying and intimidation, but Haworth has insisted that the party was not told about claims of sexual assault.

Ardern said she never knew about the nature of the allegations.

"These are serious allegations, the Prime Minister can not keep her head in the sand and pretend like it is happening somewhere far, far, away, it is happening in her own office, in her own organisation, she is the leader of the Labour Party".

She is reportedly one of seven people to have complained about the Labour staffer.

The party investigated the matter and concluded that no further action was needed against the party staffer.

Haworth earlier denied the alleged victim's account, and said neither he nor the acting general secretary, Dianna Lacy, were ever told of a sexual assault allegation against the staffer.

'I do want to offer an apology on behalf of the Labour Party to those complainants in this case who have gone through a process that I believe has caused them harm, ' Ardern said.

"I would be happy to meet with complainants. She needs to come clean with everything she has known, and when".

Ms Bennett told Parliament the man at the centre of the allegations works in the Labour Leader's office at Parliament.

"I'm comfortable with what I've done in this process", he told reporters today. "I have to respect that process".

She was now seeking advice on the alleged's offender employment.

Nigel Haworth has been Labour Party president since 2015.

Mr Bridges said standing back and looking at evidence, there were up to 12 complainants, adding that the process had been going on for many months and senior staff knew about "alleged sexual assaults".

A statement from a representative of six of the complainants said Labour need to make the changes required to ensure the same mistakes did not happen again.

"We are still calling on Nigel Haworth to apologise to the survivors for the handling of this process under his leadership".

However, Mr Bridges told TVNZ1's Breakfast this morning: "I just don't think the Prime Minister's story on this rings particularly true". "We'd also like to thank the Labour Party members who have responded to us with strong messages of support".
