Remembering the 9/11 attacks, 18 years later

Families of 9/11 victims are set to gather at Ground Zero and memorials around the country today, 18 years after the terror attacks that killed almost 3,000 people.

Meanwhile, the annual Flight 93 National Memorial Commemorative Service will be held in Shanksville. Officials concluded the attackers had been aiming the plane toward Washington.

The ceremony in NYC paused six times: twice for when the planes hit the Twin Towers, twice for when each tower fell, once for the attack on the Pentagon, and once more for Flight 93.

A flag hangs on the Pentagon before a ceremony in observance of the 18th anniversary of the September 11, 2011, attacks. But this year's ceremony ran late, and the anniversary was observed at 9:47 a.m.

"For the families who join us, this is your anniversary of personal and permanent loss". Above is a livestream to view the memorial; below is a feed from the White House that is expected to feature audio of the vice president's remarks.

The ceremony is underway to remember the 40 passengers and crew who died after terrorists commandeered Flight 93 on September 11, 2001. Vice President Mike Pence is to speak at the third attack site, near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. As they read their names, family members added anecdotes about their loved ones, and read messages to them, often discussing those who carried on their legacy.

Smoke pours from the twin towers of the World Trade Center after they were hit by two hijacked airliners in a terrorist attack September 11, 2001 in NY.

By now, the heritage of grief has been handed down to a new generation, including children and young adults who knew their lost relatives barely or not at all.

"Uncle Joey, I wish I got to know you", Joseph Henry said of his uncle and namesake, firefighter Joseph Patrick Henry.

"We love you, we miss you and you will always be America's heroes", said one woman after reading out the names of her brother and cousin. The attacks' aftermath is visible from airport security checkpoints to Afghanistan.

It has been 18 years since al-Qaida hijackers commandeered four USA commercial airliners and crashed them into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Former President George W. Bush, the commander-in-chief at the time of the 2001 attacks, is due at an afternoon wreath-laying at the Pentagon.

Nearly 3,000 people died in the attacks on the World Trade Center.

NY and the nation on Wednesday will stop to remember the 18th anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks.

Earlier Wednesday morning, at 6:46 a.m., an American Flag was unfurled down the side of the Pentagon.

September 11, 2001 changed the face of the U.S. and and left almost 3,000 dead at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and in Pennsylvania where Flight 93 was forced to crash.

It is believed the fourth hijacked plane was aiming for either the White House or the Capitol but the unarmed passengers rebelled against the hijackers and brought the plane down.

Trump campaigned for president on a pledge to withdraw US troops from Afghanistan.

Americans are commemorating 9/11 with mournful ceremonies, volunteering, appeals to "never forget" and rising attention to the terror attacks' extended toll on responders.

Another relative at ground zero underscored that Muslims were among the dead.

The 9/11 attacks by the terrorist group al-Qaida were the deadliest ever on American soil.

Less than a month after the terror attacks, Bush announced on October 7, 2001, that USA and British troops had begun striking Afghanistan for harbouring the al Qaeda terrorists blamed for 9-11.

Almost 3,000 people were killed in coordinated attacks in NY, the Pentagon, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
