Sixth American Dies From Vaping-Related Lung Illness Amid Warning From CDC

ABC spoke with Bloomberg about the announcement and said, "All of a sudden, all of the progress we've made reducing smoking, particularly in kids, is in jeopardy because they start vaping".

As of September 6, over 450 possible cases of severe lung illness associated with e-cigarette use have been reported across 33 states and 1 USA territory.

Kansas has reported six other vaping-related cases as part of the national outbreak.

The agency says no evidence of infectious diseases have been identified, meaning the illnesses are likely associated with chemical exposure.

Constantino said many people who vape have been "on pins and needles" for the investigation results, and she is concerned that the reports of a link to vaping THC may give people an excuse to ignore the warnings.

Dr. Dana Meaney-Delman, with the CDC's Lung Injury Response, said while this investigation is ongoing, people should consider not using e-cigarette products.

The Bureau of Tobacco Free Florida told The News Service of Florida on Monday that state health officials have "received several potential reports of illness" and that the Department of Health and the Florida Poison Information Center Network are working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on investigating a multistate outbreak of severe pulmonary disease. "As that work continues, I urge Kansans to be careful".

Public health officials say Idaho has two confirmed cases of serious respiratory disease among people who vape.

"We are seeing a tremendous increase in vaping among our youth, which is a public health crisis", said Ohio Health Department Director Dr. Amy Acton.

Nicole Balakos, health department commissioner, said the man who is suffering with the lung illness was transported to a Pittsburgh hospital following initial local treatment. One of the more frightening aspects of vaping is how easy it is to go undetected. "The recent deaths across our country, combined with hundreds of reported lung injury cases continue to intensify".

"Both cases have a history of vaping, including THC, but no other known commonalities such as location or specific products", she said.

But those cases don't account for all of the illnesses that have been reported, meaning either that there are multiple sources of the illnesses or that officials haven't identified the actual culprit yet.

Symptoms may include shortness of breath, chest pain, fever, fatigue, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
