Smoke, flames after train derails in Dupo, Illinois

A train derailed in Dupo, Illinois at around 1:45 p.m. EST.

Herb Simmons, Emergency Management Director for St. Clair County, said the evacuation was a precaution based on early information and some uncertainty about the type of chemical and its possible impact on people.

It is not clear what the train was transporting or if there are any injuries.

Schools in the area were being evacuated and power cut off in the neighborhood.

Locals in the Adams subdivision were ordered to evacuate and sent to the East Carondelet Community Center.

Emergency officials said they were not immediately aware of what the train was carrying. "A tank vehicle caught fire..."

"Approximately 14 rail cars derailed in Union Pacific's Dupo Yard", the company said. Both crossings are closed.

The frightening incident occurred at around 12:45 p.m. and caused a tank vehicle to catch fire, Kristen M. South, a representative for Union Pacific tells PEOPLE.

The tank vehicle contained a flammable liquid called methyl isobutyl ketone which is typically used as a solvent, according to South. It is typically used as a solvent.

Union Pacific spokeswoman Kristen South said the smoke from the fire does not pose a significant health hazard. Our yard and nearby intermodal ramp were safely evacuated.

It's highly flammable and can cause explosions. It could also damage the liver and kidneys. Black smoke coming from the derailment scene can be seen for miles and caused the evacuation of schools in the town, authorities said.

Smoke from the horror derailment and fire is visible from downtown St. Louis, which is about a 15-minute drive from Dupo, Illinois where the blaze broke out.

This is a developing story.
