Trump Administration to Ban Flavored E-Cigarettes

While e-cigarettes do have the potential to help adult and non-pregnant women quit smoking, they are not safe for youth, young adults, pregnant women or adults who do not now use tobacco products, according to the CDC.

Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar announced the administration's plan to completely remove flavored e-cigarettes from the market, save for tobacco-flavored products, on Wednesday from the Oval Office.

Trump said vaping has become such a problem that he wants parents to be informed of what is happening. "Moreover, if we see a migration to tobacco-flavored products by kids, we will take additional steps to address youth use of these products", Acting FDA Commissioner Dr. Ned Sharpless, said in a statement.

No single device, ingredient or additive has been identified, although many cases involve marijuana vaping devices. It's apparently a hot topic in the Trump household, as first lady Melania Trump recently tweeted her concerns about children and vaping.

"The last thing you want to do is make it more hard for smokers to quit smoking, and flavors do play a role for adults to quit smoking", Bakst said in an interview. Almost 80% of teens who reported vaping said they tried flavors first.

Federal law bars e-cigarette and all other tobacco sales to those under age 18. "They're gonna have pressure from the health advocates on one side, and from the industry on the other to do something", she said.

Health officials have called the trend an "epidemic", and they fear teenagers who vape will eventually start smoking. According to preliminary findings from the National Youth Tobacco Survey, more than a quarter of high school students were current e-cig users in 2019, and the majority of youth e-cig users prefer fruit and mint flavored products. Juul one of the US market leaders in vaping products offers mint, mango and other fruity flavors that account for more than 80% of its total sales.

Ted Kwong, spokesman, JUUL Labs. The new policy would allow the FDA to remove flavored products from the market. The group represents vaping manufacturers, retailers and distributors.

The agency guidance announced Wednesday instead would require vape devices to come off the market soon and await FDA clearance.

More than 80 percent of underage teens who use e-cigarettes say they chose the product because it "comes in flavors that I like", studies have found. This comes right after news of a worrying lung disease made the rounds, and just one day after former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg called for a ban on flavored e-cigarettes.

During 2015-2017, almost 2,035 e-cigarettes have exploded or caused burns in the United States alone.

However, there is scant research on the long-term effects of vaping. The agency began policing cigarettes then, but it didn't add e-cigarettes to its portfolio until 2016.
