Verify: Health risks of vaping

USA health officials have told people to stop vaping.

On Friday, the CDC announced they are now investigating over 450 cases of possible vaping-related illnesses in 33 states.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 450 potential or confirmed cases of severe lung injury have been reported, including at least 6 deaths, in 33 states and one USA territory. "We are investigating each report and looking for things that might be common among the patients, as well as asking about the types of vaping products and devices people have used to try and pinpoint the source of these illnesses".

'We're trying to prevent any additional cases and deaths, ' Meaney-Delman said.

An Illinois health official, Dr. Jennifer Layden, claimed officials there don't know the beginning illnesses first began, but she said there has been a remarkable increase since spring. Others have reportedly been attributed to bootleg e-cigarette products containing unsafe contaminants.

"I am deeply concerned about the growing epidemic of e-cigarette use in our children", she wrote. He says it was the result of three years of vaping.

On Monday, New York state officials said they are issuing subpoenas to three companies the department has identified as selling "thickening agents" containing high levels of vitamin E that can be used in black market vaping products that contain THC.

But Dr Meaney-Delman said investigators are not yet ready to distinguish between products.

On Sept. 10, LMU put out a health advisory on behalf of Student Health Services titled, "Health Advisory: Severe Pulmonary Disease Associated with Using E-Cigarette Products", which was sent to all students through the University Bulletin.

In Hawai'i, data from the 2017 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey and Youth Risk Behavior Survey show that 25.5 percent of high school students now smoke e-cigarettes, which is twice the national average. Altria Group Inc owns a 35 percent stake in Juul.

Health officials say the investigation has not identified any specific vaping or e-cigarette products linked to all cases, but many patients report using products containing cannabinoid products, such as tetrahydrocannabinol.

But many in the vaping community say there is not enough information available yet, or research conducted to discourage people from vaping all together.

Dr Meaney-Delman said some of the samples are nicotine products and some are THC products from a variety of places.

Champaign-Urbana Public Health Administrator Julie Pryde encourages anyone with symptoms - including coughing, difficulty breathing, chest pain and nausea - to see a doctor and not to fear being open with them about the vaping products they've used.

All of the patients are said to have reported vaping in the weeks and months prior to hospital admission.

It was found that most of the patients were male with a median age of 19, in a study conducted by the states of Wisconsin and IL and published in The New England Journal of Medicine.
