American cancels MAX flights until early 2020

Per CNBC, no Boeing 737 Max flights appear on American's schedule until january 16, 2020. Some costs are rising, but jet fuel was cheaper than American had expected during the quarter, and it slightly raised its profit-margin estimate.

In July, American said full-year profit would be reduced by about $400 million if the MAX remained grounded through November 2, and that figure is likely to increase now with a spillover effect into 2020.

Prior to the MAX grounding, Boeing, which delivered 806 aircraft in 2018, was targeting 900 aircraft deliveries this year.

Regulators are still reviewing proposed software changes to the grounded plane with no certain timetable for the jet's return. "The FAA will lift the aircraft's prohibition order when it is deemed safe to do so".

Regulators grounded the 737 MAX worldwide following a second fatal crash in March that killed all 157 people on board an Ethiopian Airlines plane, and is fighting to get the jet back in service later this year.

Southwest Airlines had already taken the MAX fleet out of its schedule until January 5 and United Airlines has done the same until December 19. Boeing has repeatedly said it hopes to resume flights in the fourth quarter, which began on October 1.

The Southwest Airlines Pilots Association filed a lawsuit in the District Court of Dallas in Texas Monday alleging Boeing deliberately misled the airline and its pilots about the 737 MAX.

The announcement comes as Southwest Airlines are suing Boeing for loss of wages totaling $US100 million as a result of the Boeing 737 MAX grounding. Boeing said the suit is "meritless".

"American expects to slowly phase in the MAX for commercial service and will increase flying on the aircraft throughout the month and into February", the airline said.
