Essential teases Project GEM smartphone: odd form factor with brilliant colors

If you're anxious that non-foldable smartphone design has gotten stale and familiar in recent years, you may find Essential's next Android handset to be right up your alley.

For the first time after sexual misconduct allegations, the Essential Products CEO Andy Rubin, also known as the "Father of Android", shared a glimpse of the unusual phone prototype on Twitter.

The handset, as shown in an image Rubin tweeted out, is long and slender and will apparently come in bright colors provided by what he calls "GEM Colorshift materials".

There is now no release date or pricing information for Essential's upcoming Project GEM smartphone. As far as through the live images and video, we can tell that Essential phone 2 features are in gradient finish with color-shifting material and have a punch-hole camera with one sensor.

As one can see in the pictures, the phone has a bump on the back which appears to be the camera. Both make it clear that this new device looks very different compared to the original Essential Phone. An Essential trademark application which suggests GEM as the final name for the new phone is also seen in the XDA Developer.

There are two buttons on the right side that are likely power and volume buttons for this new phone. Below the protruding rear camera module is a fingerprint scanner.

Essential has revealed earlier that it is working on an AI-powered phone that will have a small screen and will be controlled primarily using voice commands.

We're certainly interested to see the new Essential Phone, although there hasn't been any concrete news as to official availability and pricing details. It might also run Android with Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 processor.
