Repatriation of Thomas Cook passengers completed

On Monday morning, the last stranded Thomas Cook customers returned to the United Kingdom in the country's largest peacetime repatriation, launched by the government on 23 September when the holiday company folded.

Matterhorn, which involved 150 aircraft from 50 partners worldwide, "required an extraordinary effort from all involved", CAA chief executive Richard Moriarty said in a statement.

From today the CAA will open an online application form to start processing Thomas Cook ATOL refunds linked to 360,000 bookings.

The site will be used to refund more than 360,000 bookings for Thomas Cook Atol-protected holidays, covering trips that would have been taken by 800,000 people over the coming months.

ATOL protected customers who were overseas can also claim for the cost of replacing the ATOL protected parts of their trip, or out of pocket expenses as a result of delayed flights.

Around 60% of the costs for the repatriation will be picked up by CAA, with the remainder being funded by the Government.

UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) announced today that the repatriation of over 140,000 clients of the bankrupt tour firm Thomas Cook has been completed successfully.

The final flight arrived at 8.31am (0731 GMT), touching down at Manchester airport in northern England from Orlando, Florida, said a spokesman for the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

"I want to thank everyone who has played their part in delivering this enormous undertaking, including the passengers we flew home for bearing with us as we undertook this complex operation, " he said.

Refunds for Thomas Cook customers will either be handled by the Civil Aviation Authority from Monday (7 October) or by banks and card providers, so we would urge anyone waiting to claim their money back to ignore alternative websites and unsolicited calls or texts promising a refund. "In addition to this, ATOL protected passengers that were overseas when the company went into liquidation might be able to claim for out of pocket expenses".

The CAA developed the refund system to deal with the largest refund programme the organisation has ever undertaken.

On Saturday 22 flights operated to bring back around 3,994 passengers while in total around 140,000 passengers have been flown back to the United Kingdom until now.
