Shepard Smith, a frequent Trump critic, leaves Fox News

More recently, on October 10, Trump named Smith in a tweet that criticized the channel after a Fox news poll showed a slight majority of voters favoring his impeachment and removal. Trump asked, slurring and mixing up his words. On Thursday, the president cited Smith and Fox analysts Andrew Napolitano and Donna Brazile in a tweet that said, "Fox News doesn't deliver for USA anymore".

One of Fox News' longest-tenured broadcasters is leaving the network. "After requesting that I stay, they graciously obliged", Smith said in his final sign-off, without explaining his reasons for leaving. Fox's prime-time lineup, with more viewers available, generally gets around 3 million viewers. Cavuto opened his program telling his audience, "Like you, I'm a little stunned and a little heartbroken".

Smith was one of Fox News Channel's original hires in 1996 and has covered almost every major story for more than two decades. "For handing me the breaking news reins as Managing Editor, Senior Correspondent, and Chief News Anchor for this network, I am thankful and humbled", Smith said.

As Fox News' primetime lineup is dominated by conservative commentators, Smith was often an objective voice for a network, which sometimes rankled his own colleagues.

Trump, in turn, has occasionally disparaged Smith on Twitter, viewing him as an apostate at a network he considers to be loyal to him. Napolitano was called a "fool" by a guest on Carlson's show for saying Trump had committed a crime, and Smith had said the attack was "repugnant". "Some of our opinion programming is there strictly to be entertaining". And I'm honored to have anchored their work each day. "I wouldn't work there".

Over the past few years, Smith used his show to aggressively - and regularly - fact-check Trump, first as a candidate and then as President. Before this, he gained extensive local news experience throughout the state of Florida serving as a reporter for WSVN-TV (FOX) in Miami, the former WCPX-TV (CBS) in Orlando, WBBH-TV (NBC) in Fort Myers, FL and WJHG-TV (NBC) in Panama City, FL where he began his television career.

Shepard Smith said that viewers won't see him reporting the news anywhere else right away because of an agreement he made with the network when they allowed him to resign in the middle of his current contract, which is extremely rare in the TV business.
