5 killed, 120 injured in Iran earthquake

A night-time natural disaster in northwestern Iran on Friday killed five people and injured 120, according to early reports on state television.

At least 312 people have been injured, although only 13 of them needed treatment in hospital, according to state TV.

Numerous people were injured while trying to flee their houses in panic.

"Unfortunately six people were killed and 345 were injured", Iran's emergency medical services chief Pirhossein Kolivand told state TV. There were no immediate video or images broadcast from the area.

Rescuers have been dispatched to the region, officials said, with 30 homes reportedly destroyed at the epicenter of the quake.

Iran was shaken by the tremors of the natural disaster last night. A 3.Four-magnitude quake adopted at 5: 05 a.m.

Pacific time four miles from Ridgecrest, Calif., according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Iran sits where two major tectonic plates meet and experiences frequent seismic activity. In 2003, a magnitude 6.6 quake in Kerman province killed 31,000 people and flattened the ancient city of Bam.

Iran has experienced at least two other significant quakes in recent years - one in 2005 that killed more than 600 people and another in 2012 that left some 300 dead.
